Krav Maga is an eclectic, non-competitive Israeli developed self-defense system. The system includes wrestling, grappling and striking techniques and is known for its particular focus on brutal, efficient counter-attacks and real-world situations. The system comes from street-fighting skills that were developed by Imi Lichtenfeld. Lichtenfeld drew on training in both boxing and wrestling to devise the system as a way to defend the Jewish quarter from Bratislavan fascist groups in the late 1930's. After immigrating to Israel in the late-1940's, Lichtenfeld started to provide combat training lessons to what is now known as the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). These lessons developed into the system known today as Krav Maga. The system has since seen revisions for use by police, military personnel and civilians.
Krav Maga's philosophy works to emphasize simultaneous offensive and defensive maneuvers, aggression and threat neutralization. Krav Maga is utilized and implemented by both special and regular forces within the Israeli Defense Forces. Several variations have also developed and are used by various intelligence organizations, law enforcement agencies, Shin Bet and Mossad. Outside of Israel, Krave Maga is used by a number of special forces, intelligence agencies and military forces. These forces include South Korean Marine Corps Special Forces, Underwater Demolition Team(Navy Seal), Airborne Dvision, Military Intelligence Unit, American FBI, CIA, US Marshals, US Marine Corps, Airborne Division, Navy Seal, DEA, Federal Air Marshals, USAF, various SWAT teams and military intelligence departments and many more. There are also a number of organizations teaching different varieties of Krav Maga all around the world.
Krav Maga is featured in many mediums, such as film, video games and television. Some notable examples include Sam Fisher, star of Tom Clancy's book series and video game Splinter Cell, who is an expert of Krav Maga. Jennifer Lopez learned and utilized Krav Maga in the movie Enough as a way to defend herself from an abusive husband. Krav Maga is featured in the Simpson's episode involving a family visit to Israel. Krav Maga started small but has grown into a self-defense methodology known, practiced and admired around the world.
